There are numerous local attractions and a
series of guides and maps are available for the use of cottage guests.
The village is close to many National Trust properties and gardens, including Montacute House,
also built of Hamstone.
Walking is also enjoyable in this area and Ham Hill,
near to Montacute, can be reached on foot. At the top of Ham Hill is a large
Iron Age and Roman hill fort which uniquely has an Inn, The Prince of Wales, within it! The hill is
also the source of stone from which the cottage is built.
Children will enjoy
the Cricket St Thomas Wildlife Park, near Chard, the location for the BBC TV
series ‘To the Manor Born’.
The Dorset coast is only 19 miles away; Lyme Regis famous
for its fossils can be reached in 30 minutes by car.
The small town of Crewkerne
(4 miles) can provide most holiday needs, although serious shoppers would enjoy
Yeovil (7 miles) and Taunton (20 miles).
There are many other attractions including cider mills, the Fleet Air Arm Museum at
Yeovilton, Sparkford Motor Museum and Hornsbury Mill (known as ‘The Cream Tea
Centre of the West’) - or you could simply relax in the peaceful rural
atmosphere and wander around the local countryside. You’ll be spoiled for
choice!
